Who are Your Bullfighters?

San Antonio Rodeo 2014

Who are your bullfighters?  Are they ready to jump in front of a bull for you?

It is almost the end of the rodeo here in San Antonio and I have completely enjoyed this year’s events. This is the third year that we have gone to the rodeo. Prior to that I had never seen a rodeo. So I still consider myself a rodeo newbie. Each year I have learned a little bit more about it and the appreciated the skills required to reach this level of competition. But up to this point I focused on the cowboy’s skills.

This year it has been a little bit different. I started to notice and appreciate the skills of the rodeo bullfighter.   At first I didn’t know the difference between the bull fighters and the rodeo clowns. The bull fighters are no rodeo clowns. They aren’t going to tell you corny jokes. But when you see them dressed up in clown like costumes you might think they fill the same role. But their key role is cowboy protection. Distract the bull when the cowboy needs his back covered.

Being a bull fighter isn’t just a bunch of running around in a random way. They are always critically aware of the situation. Thinking ahead and anticipating what they need to do and where they need to be all in support of the cowboy. And when they need to move in front of the bull they jump without hesitation; get the bulls attention focused on them and away from the cowboy they just bucked off. It could be a disaster if they didn’t know where they needed to be and reflexively move there.

So what does all of this have to do with what I normally write about? We all need a bullfighter (support team) in our corner. Even if you are a solopreneur. You probably have an accountant or attorney that you work with. Maybe an assistant or contractor. And their skill level is important to your success. If they aren’t there when you need them to jump in front of the bull for you, then what? And just like the bullfighters, if you don’t really understand their function, it is easy to dismiss their importance. Their skill can make a tangible difference. They let the cowboy focus on his job of riding the bull. They focus on keeping the bull away from him if he gets bucked off.

So who are your bull fighters?  Have you thanked them today?
